10 Tips for Being the Perfect Host

If you're hosting a party at your home, you want to make sure that your guests feel welcome and comfortable. Here are some tips to host a perfect Brofessional party.

1) Have appetizers prepared, the house tidied and cleaned, and the table set before your guests arrive.

2) If you're having a dinner party, make sure that you know everyone's dietary preferences ahead of time.

3) As your guests arrive, offer to take their coats, offer a drink and appetizers, and give them a brief tour of the house if they have not been there before (e.g. show them the kitchen, living room, and where the washrooms are located).

4) Make sure to introduce guests that have not met before, and tell them something about the other person so it's easier for them to start a conversation.

5) If you're serving dinner, wait at least thirty minutes, so your guests have time to relax and visit with one another. It's also a good idea to tell guests ahead of time when you'll be serving dinner.

6) If you plan on having a late party and have children, it's a good idea to have them stay at a friend's house for the night. Otherwise, they'll be too excited to go to bed and you'll end up with overtired cranky children at your party. If you prefer to have your children stay at home, have the other guests bring their children as well, and tell the guests without children about your plans.

7) If one of your guests has had far too much to drink, offer to call a cab or have someone drive him/her home.

8) It's your job to discreetly and tactfully let someone know if they've overstayed their welcome. If a guest is being overly obnoxious or rude to the other guests, you need to let them know.

9) Don't expect guests to clean up. If they offer, then it's up to you whether or not you'd like help, but don't ask them to clean.

10) Relax and have fun!

...for anyone interested in making a good impression. I find that these days, it's especially important to determine your guest's dietary needs beforehand. Whether they're kosher, lactose-intolerant, vegan, or even marcobiotic, you can bet someone will have special needs. They'll really appreciate being accommodated and it'll paint you as a considerate host.
