Add a Little Plaid

in

Hot on the 08-09 runways is an oldie but a goodie: plaid! You may not be daring enough to attempt a full-on plaid suit, but you can easily add a little plaid to your wardrobe on any given day. Pair a plaid tie with a solid shirt. Try a skinny tie for a casual, low-key day, or a typical plaid tie for a more conservative occasion. For the best results, try a blue or green-hued plaid against a solid white or black. More adventurous Bros should pair a subtle plaid with a striped or patterned button-down. Just be sure the patterns aren’t too similar – don’t do diamond-shaped plaid with a diamond-patterned shirt, don’t mix stripes with stripes, etc. Try red plaids against blue or black stripes or blue/black stripes.

Roll with it…

I cannot say that I am the biggest fan of plaid, but that is because I feel I have never made it look good. But I gave it a shot the other day and I was pleasantly surprised. If you do the right combo with shirt to tie to coat and don't make the tie the focus, it can be a nice change to your normal attire. I received about four compliments that day. Quite unexpected for a tie to be sure (unless I am wearing my Santa Clause one) but I think it was because it was different and sharp looking and people noticed it. One compliment came from my boss and the other from a stunningly beautiful business woman. Nice!

How can you not be a big fan of plaid?

I love plaid. If done right, plaid can make a great impression. It is something I learned a long time ago because my dad pulled it off like magic. Maybe that's more old school but I still dig it!
