Are You Wearing the Appropriate Sized Suit?

You may not be wearing the appropriate size suit. Most men wear suits that are actually too large or too small for
them. With some simple tailor work, you can get a better look – and a better fit.
First off, make sure the pant legs fall around your ankles. Any higher up on your leg and you need longer pants – it’s horribly crass to have your ankles or socks showing. If the trousers fall below your ankles, get them hemmed to avoid embarrassing falls or trips. Use your waist measurement to get the right size, as well. If you need to use a belt, the suit will look frumpy, so try to get a pair that fits, but isn’t too tight. This is usually the easiest part – your waist measurements will come in handy.
The jacket fit is tricky – you typically want a jacket that ends right around where your butt starts to curve. Yes, it seems silly, but it works – otherwise, suits can seem too clunky or too tight. The only exception is with certain types of formal suits, which can have longer jackets in the back. Finally, check your shirt. The sleeves should be about an inch longer than where your wrist is. If you’ve got all those things in order, you’re good to go – SUIT UP!
