According to “Restaurant” magazine, the French Laundry restaurant located in Yountville, California (in the Napa Valley), has the best cuisine in the United States. It had an overall rating of #5 out of 50 restaurants based on a poll of international chefs and critics.
There are three menus served at the French Laundry, with a price of $240 served daily. One is a prie fixe menu; the second is a degustation (tasting) menu, and the third is a vegetable tasting menu.
The tasting menus consist of between five and eleven dishes, often with some optional courses (such as white truffles and foie gras) for about $30 to $100 more. The dishes on the standard menus are served in either seven or nine courses.
The food at the French Laundry consists of American choices with French influences. The owner Thomas Keller, includes produce, meat, and other ingredients produced by his own family. The average meal takes between 3.5-4 hours, often with a midway break.
Signature dishes include Oysters and Pearls (oysters and caviar served on warm savory pearl tapioca custard), Surf and Turf (lobster tail with sautéed foie gras), Peas and Carrots (lobster knuckle meat wrapped in a pancake with carrot and butter emulsion sauce and pea shoots), and Yabba-Dabba-Doo (bone-in beef ribeye with crispy potatoes and prunes).
If you wish to dine at the French Laundry, reservations are accepted up to two months in advance.
