Dress Your Age

Regardless of what the newest fashion trend or corporate policy may be, there’s one cardinal rule every professional must conform to: dress your age! Here are a few tips to be sure you’re in the clear:

  1. Kicks – Being up on the latest shoe styles is a positive, but not if you’re wearing shoes that scream ‘immature.’ Brands like Vans and Puma are notoriously popular with teen hipsters, but they also have more mature designs.
  2. Casual clothes – Next time you pick up an ironic graphic tee, hoodie, or patterned pair of shoes, ask yourself – is this something I’d be comfortable in at the office? Is this a good first impression to make? As a young professional, you want to appear mature and on top of your game – and it can be difficult to be taken seriously when you’re in a sweatshirt and jeans, regardless of how fashionable they are.
  3. Tightness – Tight-fitting clothes have been making frequent appearances in 21st century style mags, but they’re not for everyone. What you can pull off in your 20s may seem sorry by your 30s. It all really depends on your body type, but in general, as you age, it’s best to drift away from the tightness factor. Remember, fitted does not equal tight!

Good list. But many guys seem to miss the memo that nobody over 20 should be wearing anything with skulls, or wear those pattern print hoodies.

Only too true.

I cannot emphasize this enough. I guess I was one of the lucky ones because I could always dress the part. But I can tell you story upon story about young kids in their late teens and early twenties who just never seemed to 'get it'. I could even go on to mention guys older than that. The point is people see what you show them, and if you give them a sense of immaturity then your already behind.
