Google to Purchase Digg?

According to technology blog techcrunch.com, Google is planning to purchase the website Digg for about $200 million. The deal would make Digg part of Google's News Service.

The speculation comes after images appeared online last week suggesting that Google was experimenting with similar voting as the one used by Digg to aggregate search results.

Digg, which was started in 2004, has become a popular website, with users submitting stories and voting for other's submissions. Digg originally included technology stories, but now has news and stories from many topics such as fitness, fashion, and news headlines.

It is also rumored that Microsoft is interested in buying Digg. Techcrunch.com reports that the majority of Digg's revenue comes from a three year advertising deal struck with Microsoft, which would be cancelled if Google purchases the company.
