The first thing to understand is how you do know her. Is she a personal friend, an acquaintance or simply a stranger? If the direction of the discussion is brief or you hit it off remember to keep your focus. In this case, be the exception to the rule, especially in how you present yourself. If something goes wrong during the conversation explain in detail what exactly you meant and do your best to make amends. Explicit communication can win or save the day.
Like any other business protocol, do not follow up with extravagant means. Remember, it is the simple things that go a long way. A personal thank you note sent through the mail (and not email) goes a long way with anyone. This scenario is no different. Should the relationship develop into future conversations and you discover more about her personal life, such as the names of any children she may have, her pet's names or her family members behooves you to remember them. While it may not come up again, the fact that you can ask specifically how so and so is doing will leave a positive impression. Again, attention to detail is the key to strengthening the relationship and making it last.
