Say It in Person

So you have a problem with your boss. Who doesn’t? Bad-mouthing him or her with colleagues is not only not a problem, it’s a time-honored workplace tradition. But please, please don’t leave a paper (well, electronic, these days) trail. Instead of forwarding a negative missive around the office or flaming the big boss through a messaging system or e-mail, leave the negative sentiments for in-person bashing. What you say or do online could come back to haunt you, especially if you’re using a corporate e-mail account. Plus, there’s always the chance that an e-mail will accidentally get CC’ed, BCC’ed, or forwarded and end up in a place where it shouldn’t end up – like your boss’ inbox. Instead of putting your anger or frustration into written form, pick a location (preferably a good distance from your workplace), gather, and vent freely.

Only too true…

I can remember I always said to myself that if ever I became a boss I would be the coolest boss ever. I like to think that I have reached that status with those I oversee, but I cannot help but wonder if they ever vent to their buddies about me. Personally, I have always found it more conducive to creating a solid relationship and it also avoids a lot of awkward moments in the workplace if people just approach me about their problems rather than going behind my back. I would recommend this to anyone who has serious issues with their boss, but be sure to implement great tact and be willing to hear his or her side of the story. Sometimes it can just be a sensitive area.
